Not Going To Plan

The last week has been terrible. We are having to stay with the dog 24 hours a day so she doesn’t bite the stitches or the drains. Myself and my husband are taking it in turns staying up with her.

As you can imagine the home education has really suffered. I don’t think she has ever spent so much time watching videos and playing games. I am just too tired to sort out work and anyway I don’t think she would do the work properly anyway as she has been really upset by what has happened to the dog.

Hopefully next week will be better.

A Bad Day

Well today has already been one of those days I never want to go through again. I got a phone call from my husband around 7.15am to say he couldn’t find one of our dogs but he had heard a howl and thought she was badly hurt. I rushed upstairs to wake the children up so we could go out and look for her. Once they were ready, which took less than 10 minutes, we went to open the back gate into the woods and she came in. Unfortunately she had had a bad accident and the skin was missing on her left side. The patch was around 10″ x 18″. My husband is now at the vets with her and I’m writing this as I’m waiting for news.

She is out of surgery (2 & 3/4 hours) and we have to wait until 2.30 to speak to the vet again.

Just spoken to the vet and she is up and moving around and it’s looking hopeful that she can come home later. The vet will ring us at 5.30

My husband got back home half an hour ago. She is stitched around three quarters of her body with 6 drains in. She is on 2 lots of antibiotics and 2 lots of pain killers, I have never felt so sorry for an animal, she looks miserable.

The vet thinks it was probably caused by barbed wire. She must have run into it and not been able to stop. I just don’t want to think about that any more.

Owl Pellets

Yesterday Abbie took apart some owl pellets which were found when walking the dogs. Before she started she did some reading on the internet and soaked them in water for a while with a little disinfectant and wore latex gloves all the time she was handling the pellets.

She’d read that she was most likely to find bones, teeth, fur and feathers so she was quite excited to see if there was a skull. Unfortunately all she found was tiny pieces of bone and fur. Luckily she still found it interesting and wants to do more.

These are a couple of the photo’s she took.

Why We Made The Decision To Home Education

The decision to home educate was one that was thought about long and hard. I don’t think it’s something you can just jump into without thought. Our 10 year old had wanted to come out of school for 2/3 years. She was very unhappy in school and would cling to us each morning when we took her to school. Things were decided for us when we found out that a teacher had said that people were uncomfortable around our child. This came a few months after a teacher called.her despicable.

Learning A New language

Abbie decided a while ago that she wanted to learn Swedish. The reason behind this is that she wants to move there after going on holiday. We looked at several language courses including some free ones like Duolingo: Learn Languages Free and Innovative Language 101 – Learn English, French, Japanese, German, Spanish, Korean, Russian, Chinese, and more. But neither of these had Swedish on them.

We ended up choosing The Rosetta Stone Swedish Complete Course. This was one probably the most expensive but we waited to buy it until an offer came on for 60% off.

All the family have been using it but Abbie is doing brilliantly. She seems to have a natural aptitude for it. I have recorded a small section today of her doing a pronunciation section so you can see what it is like. YouTube video
